The shamanic dieta is a process of deep purification in traditional Amazonian shamanism. The dieta functions by moving tree spirits from the trees into your body, where they will live forever. The tree spirits bring their medicine and use it to transform and teach you from inside your body.
The shamanic dieta consists of having a very restricted diet for 5 days. You can eat only a few very bland foods, such as green plantains, yucca meal, chicken, eggs, 1 other type of meat, and 1 type of fish. No salt, sugar, or oil is allowed. During that period, you ingest one or more medicinal plants that you will be dieting. You are purifying your body with a limited diet while ingesting the plants so that they absorb into your body. You make a sacrifice to the plant spirits through the diet, and, in exchange, you absorb their medicine as the spirits of the plants t
each you.
There are certain restrictions that you will have to follow during and after the dieta. For instance, during the dieta, you are not allowed to use soap or toothpaste, and you must avoid direct physical contact with others (except for the shaman and other dieters). After the dieta, you are not allowed to have ANY sort of sexual contact (including masturbation) for 30 days, and you cannot consume pork for at least 6 months. Dieters should stay in the shade (out of the sun) and spend most of their time relaxing (not hiking or taking part in any physically strenuous activity). They should remain relatively secluded from non-dieters as much as possible. There are several other restrictions, and the shaman might determine additional ones that you should follow.
Restrictions during the dieta at the camp:- No western medications during diet at camp including contraceptive pills and malaria tablets
- No cosmetics including repellant and tooth paste
- No jungle walks
- No boat excursion
- No heavy physical activity
- No leaving camp
- No touching anyone, including hand shaking and hugging
- No coffee
- Only eat and drink what we serve during the diet

Restrictions after the shamanic dieta:
- No sex for 30 days
- No alcohol for 30 days
- No pork for 6 months
- No Western street drugs for 30 days
Supplies and food are purchased in advance of the workshop. For this reason, if you have signed up for the dieta and cancel at the last minute, we cannot guarantee you regular, non-dieta meals at the camp. So if you sign up for the dieta option, please ensure that you are committed to it.
Traditionally, the shamanic dieta is done only by a shaman or a shamanic apprentice, or as a part of certain types of healing. We generally suggest the shamanic dieta only to people who are very interested in the practice of Amazonian shamanism. This requires deep commitment on the part of the dieter. Quitting a diet or breaking the rules is not permitted. The only way to fix a diet where the restrictions have been broken is through the drinking of Ayahuasca in the presence of the shamans who guided the diet. The experience of having the energies involved in a broken diet straightened is dark and agonizing.
Dieting does not necessarily mean that you will have a more intense or more spiritual experience than if you do not diet on one of our workshops/retreats. If you are not seriously interested in the dieta or apprenticing, then we suggest that you come for a non-dieta workshop. A non-dieta workshop may be much more beneficial for you, as you will have more energy during the day and in the ceremonies. If the dieta is something that you are serious about, we would be happy to have you on a dieta workshop.
